Planning the garden

Planning the summer garden during winter is at once reassuring and frightening. Picking out seed varieties like Cukamelons and Cherokee Purple tomatoes, I can practically taste the sunshine.

Seeds are the synecdoche of the expectations and hopes for the coming year. Will the frost come late again this spring? Will the nights be warm? Will our saved marigold seed blossom? When you hold them in your hands, marigold seeds are light. With all the hopes they hold, I would have thought that they would be heavy.

Grazing in winter

The sheep are able to graze during the winter and heavy snow.
They just move the snow off the grass and feed. It's another aspect of the natural and sustainable approach we take.
